About the game
About Powerball 5/69
Powerball is run by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) and sold in 45 US states, plus Washington DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Its first draw took place on 22 April 1992, replacing MUSL's original game, Lotto America, from 1988. Today's format, 5 numbers from 69 plus a red Powerball from 26, has been played since 7 October 2015. Since 23 August 2021 there are three draws a week, on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time, held at the Florida Lottery draw studio in Tallahassee.
The jackpot is won by matching all five numbers and the Powerball. It has no cap: it rolls over from draw to draw until someone wins it, and is shared when there is more than one winning ticket. The winner chooses between an annuity paid in 30 instalments and a smaller lump sum. The other eight prize tiers pay fixed amounts, except in California, where they are pari-mutuel. Power Play multiplies the lower prizes by 2 to 10, and Double Play is a separate draw held after every Powerball draw.
The largest lottery prize in the world was won on Powerball: $2.04 billion, on a single ticket sold in Altadena, California, for the draw of 7 November 2022. Since July 2026 the game is also sold in the United Kingdom, where players share only the jackpot pool with US players.
The Lottevo archive holds 3,727 Powerball 5/69 draws, from 22 April 1992 to 31 October 2026.
Since 10 October 2015, when the current format began, the most frequently drawn number is 21 (128 times), and the least frequent is 13 (79 times). Each draw is independent: past frequencies do not change the odds of the next one.
